Caudwell Marine is a pioneering UK marine engineering company, backed by entrepreneur and philanthropist John Caudwell. We are redefining marine propulsion through the development of a diesel outboard system built for uncompromising performance, reliability and control in all conditions, with a global product launch planned for 2026. As a growing and ambitious business, we are focused on delivering cutting-edge technology designed for the toughest marine environments and turning innovation into real-world impact.
At Caudwell Marine, every team member plays an important role in shaping the future of the company. Our approach is built around being confident, committed and consistent in everything we do. Driven by endurance and powered by people, we are building a team that sets high standards and is helping redefine the future of marine propulsion.
Role & Responsibilities
The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, reporting to the Engineering Manager, will lead the design and development of complex mechanical components, assemblies and sub-systems from concept through to production-intent release. The role provides senior-level engineering judgement, CAD ownership, design governance and cross-functional support to deliver robust, manufacturable and serviceable marine propulsion products.
Responsibilities include:
- Own mechanical design work packages across structures, housings, brackets, mechanisms, cooling, mounting, enclosure or propulsion-system interfaces as assigned.
- Guide design maturity from concept layouts through detailed CAD, drawings, tolerance definition, prototype build and validation support.
- Provide technical leadership to engineers and designers while ensuring alignment with programme timing, cost, quality and performance requirements.
- Develop mechanical concepts, layouts, 3D CAD models, assemblies and detailed 2D drawings to agreed standards.
- Apply sound engineering principles to design for strength, stiffness, durability, sealing, corrosion resistance, thermal behaviour, manufacturability, assembly and service access.
- Lead or support design reviews, packaging reviews, DFMEA, tolerance stack analysis and technical risk assessments.
- Define engineering requirements for components and sub-systems, including interfaces, loads, materials, coatings, fasteners and validation needs.
- Work with analysis engineers to define load cases, review CAE results and implement design improvements.
- Support prototype manufacture, build issue resolution, supplier queries, test failures and engineering change requests.
- Ensure CAD data, drawings, BOMs and design records are accurate, controlled and suitable for release.
- Mentor junior engineers and designers in design methods, standards, drawing practice and decision-making.
- Collaborate with manufacturing, procurement and quality teams to achieve cost-effective and repeatable designs.
Required Skills & Experience
- Strong 3D CAD and engineering drawing capability, including GD&T/tolerancing, datum strategy and design release discipline.
- Demonstrable experience designing mechanical components or assemblies for production or high-integrity prototype applications.
- Knowledge of materials, fasteners, castings, machining, fabrication, additive/prototype processes, corrosion protection and sealing methods.
- Good understanding of design verification, DFMEA, DFM/DFA, engineering change control and configuration management.
- Clear communication skills with the ability to make balanced engineering decisions across performance, cost, timing and risk.
Personal Attributes
- Consistent, confident, and committed approach to work.
- Demonstrates ownership, accountability and sound engineering judgement.
- Communicates clearly, escalates risk early and works constructively across functions.
- Balances technical rigor with programme timing, cost, quality and safety considerations.
- Supports a culture of continuous improvement, learning and disciplined engineering execution.
Qualifications
- Degree-qualified, or equivalent experience, in mechanical engineering, marine engineering, automotive engineering or a related discipline.
Additional Information
- Location: Coventry.
- Working Hours & Hybrid Policy: The standard working hours for this role are Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
